Chapter 7.6 Prayer and Intention

Prayer and Intention

“Whatever the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve.”
W. Clement Stone (1902-2002)    American Author

Prayer is a part of all organized religions.  Prayer is generally practiced as a request for assistance from a higher being.  To me, this concept of prayer is one of the biggest misconceptions in the attainment of Faith.

“Desire, ask, believe, receive.”
Stella Terrill Mann     Spiritual/Self-help Author

For me, prayer cannot be hoping, wishing, begging, or asking please.  If we are all in the image of God, all a part of the Universal Force, then asking for something to happen falls back on ourselves.  When we pray by asking God or Nature or Infinity for something we want for ourselves, whether it be health, forgiveness, protection, a touchdown,  … we are removing ourselves from the result of the equation. We establish ourselves as passive recipients.  We can’t just say, “Please make this happen” or “Please help me.”  We have to be a part of the solution, if it’s meant to happen.

“Destiny is usually just around the corner…..  But what destiny does not do is home visits.  You have to go for it.”
The Shadow of the Wind Carlos Ruiz Zafon, Spanish Author

If we truly give our trust to the eternal force, we need not ask.  We need to believe, we need to know that our wishes will happen.   If we focus our intent on achieving something important to our core, we will attract the positive assistance we need to achieve our goals.  But we have to totally give in … we have to erase any doubt.

“First step is to accept a faith that you are here to complete a mission, your life-mission, and that the Great Creator will assist you on your way.”
The War of Art ,      Steven Pressfield

The prayer … the aspiration … has to be genuine. It must be based on your commitment of Faith in the goodness of the Universe. Going through the motions of a repetitious prayer will not get you there.  Holy on the Sabbath will not get you there. You have to believe that your guides or angels will help you achieve your goal.

“In prayer it is better to have a heart without words than words without a heart.”
Mahatma Ghandi (1869-1948)     Indian Spiritual Leader

In his book Power of Intention, Dr. Wayne Dyer explains that to use intention, you have to realize that you are a part of this incredible, miraculous Universe.

“Open up to receiving the assistance you desire. Trust in intention. It exists for you. Stay alert and be willing to follow any guidance that comes your way. Stay in vibrational harmony in the all-providing Source.”
Power of Intention,       Dr. Wayne Dyer, Author and Educator

He discusses how to connect with Intention. You need to be creative, be kind, be love, be beauty, be ever-expansive, be abundant, be receptive. The Universe is all of those, and your life-mission is to live your part of the whole. Doing positive things and thinking of positive results seems to be a good part to play.

Another important point here is that you cannot get hung up in the “how” at first. You just have to be real positive on the “what” it is you want.  “How” to get there will come to you, it will work its way out. The way that you think things will happen may not be how you get there at all.

“…anyone that ever accomplished anything did not know how they were going to do it.  They just knew that they were going to do it.”
Bob Proctor        Philosopher, Author

You have to be ready to see your path and be willing to follow its tracks.  Sitting back after a well-defined wish and thinking it’ll materialize is like waiting for a genie to pop out of your bottle of beer. Be aware of any synchronicities or occurrences and follow them to the next clue.  It’s a treasure hunt and clues will be in front of you … if you are looking and you have Faith.

“I have learned, as a rule of thumb, never to ask whether you can do something.  Say, instead, that you are doing it. Then fasten your seat-belt.  The most remarkable things will follow.”
The Artist’s Way,       Julia Cameron

You have to form a good picture of what it is that you seek. Do you want that fulfilling relationship, the big break, simply the chance to follow our dreams? You need to contemplate on it. You need to meditate on it. You must absorb the positive energy you feel as you sort out specifically in your consciousness what it is that you really want. Often we are too general and what we get isn’t exactly the result we thought we pictured. We are just not detailed enough to get everything wrapped up nicely in our vision.

“I always wanted to be somebody, but I should have been more specific.”
Lily Tomlin      Comedienne

But the Great Scriptwriter adds a little drama, a few twists to make the journey interesting.  Wishing for your Prince Charming or your Sleeping Beauty? Be prepared that the Prince may charm too much and the Beauty may snore.  If it was as easy as just manifesting things exactly as we dream, life would be boringly unchallenging.

“It seems to work more like we shake the apple tree and the universe delivers oranges.”
The Artists Way,      Julia Cameron

Now, let me clarify my thoughts on prayer.  Prayer is a very important activity, a communication of Faith.  It is a powerful expression of humility and gratitude.  People who believe in Goodness for all and experience it through their religious teachings and spiritual practices are adding to the enhancement of positive energy and are clearing the road for others.  But in my mind, we are not just in the hands of the Lord, we are the fingers of the hands of the Great Creatress.  We have to do our work.

“Heaven helps those that help themselves.”
Samuel Smiles (1812-1904)     Scottish Author, Self-Help w. 1859

A lot of documentation also exists that the power of prayer, specifically collective prayer, can have an enormous effect on the outcome of individuals and events.  It seems that if a group of real-believing people can all concentrate on the same picture of the betterment of someone or something, remarkable results can occur. It is the power of a common intent.

Once again, the key to Prayer and Intention is not praying for outside help, but visualizing the positive outcome.  If we are on the right path, the forces in the Universe will journey with us. Developing a positive picture of the future can help to somehow guide a positive outcome.  Never under-estimate the power of the positive.

“You cannot travel the path until you have become the path itself.”
Gautama Buddha (563BC–483BC)  Spiritual Teacher/Founder of Buddhism
